JOURNEY INTO SPIRIT-FILLED LIVING

LESSON 7

LIVING A WORTHY LIFE

EPHESIANS 4: 1-10

PAUL HAS MADE IT CLEAR IN THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS THAT WE ARE BELIEVERS AND RECIPIENTS OF UNBELIEVABLE BLESSINGS IN CHRIST BECAUSE OF GOD’S UNFATHOMABLE LOVE. FOR THIS REASON, IN MOST VERSIONS, CHAPTER FOUR BEGINS I THEREFORE, WHICH IS HOW THE GREEK TEXT BEGINS. THE WORD THEREFORE REFERS TO ALL PAUL HAS WRITTEN IN THE FIRST THREE CHAPTERS ABOUT WHAT GOD HAS DONE FOR US IN CHRIST. BECAUSE OF ALL GOD HAS DONE FOR US IN CHRIST, WHAT DOES PAUL URGE US TO DO IN EPHESIANS 4: 1C?

  • THE WORD TRANSLATED WORTHY, MEANS EQUAL WEIGHT AND REFERS TO                        BALANCE AS ON BALANCE SCALES. IT CARRIES THE IDEA OF ENDEAVORING TO                                  LIVE LIVES EQUAL TO THE BLESSINGS WE HAVE IN CHRIST.                                                                           THIS PASSAGE TELLS US THREE THINGS WE MUST HAVE TO LIVE WORTHY LIVES.

FIRST THING: THE RIGHT CHARACTER (EPHESIANS 4: 2-3).

LIVING LIVES WORTHY OF OUR BLESSINGS IN CHRIST REQUIRES AT LEAST THREE CHARACTER QUALITIES, NONE OF WHICH COME NATURALLY TO US. FIRST, WE ARE TO HAVE ALL LOWLINESS, OR HUMILITY (EPHESIANS 4: 2A). BEING HUMBLE IS THE OPPOSITE OF BEING ARROGANT AND PRIDEFUL.

“THE GREATEST EXAMPLE OF HUMILITY IN THE BIBLE IS THE LORD JESUS.”

JOHN 13: 4, 5, 15

THIS MEANS JESUS EXPECTS US TO BE HUMBLE, NOT ONLY BEFORE GOD, BUT BEFORE EACH OTHER. SECOND, OUR HUMILITY CAUSES US TO HAVE MEEKNESS (EPHESIANS 4: 2A). MEEKNESS IS THE OPPOSITE OF RUDENESS AND HARSHNESS. HUMILITY IS THE ATTITUDE, AND MEEKNESS IS THE ACTION THAT RESULTS. BEING MEEK MEANS WE CARE ABOUT PEOPLE AND THEIR FEELINGS.

1 THESSALONIANS 2: 7B

“IF WE ARE MEEK, WE WILL ALWAYS CARE FOR AND BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHERS.”

THIS BEGINS IN THE HOME, WHERE WE OFTEN WANT TO DOMINATE AND HAVE OUR OWN WAY. IF WE DESIRE TO LIVE WORTHY LIVES, AS CHRIST DID, WE MUST START AT HOME BY BEING CONSIDERATE OF OUR SPOUSES AND CHILDREN.

  • THIRD, LIVING A WORTHY LIFE REQUIRES LONGSUFFERING, OR PATIENCE                (EPHESIANS 4: 2B). THIS MEANS WE PUT UP WITH THE FAULTS AND MISTAKES                                 OF OTHERS. THE NEXT PHRASE DESCRIBES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE LONGSUFFERING FORBEARING ONE ANOTHER IN LOVE (EPHESIANS 4: 2C). WHEN WE ARE LONGSUFFERING AND BEAR WITH OTHERS IN LOVE, WE MAKE ALLOWANCES FOR THEIR FAULTS AND MISTAKES.

1 PETER 4: 8C

GOD WANTS US TO HAVE THESE VIRTUES SO WE WILL ENDEAVOR TO KEEP THE UNITY OF THE OF THE SPIRIT IN THE BOND OF PEACE (EPHESIANS 4: 3).

WHEN WE ARE NOT HUMBLE, MEEK, AND PATIENT, THERE WILL BE NO UNITY IN OUR HOMES OR OUR CHURCHES. THIS UNITY IS ONLY POSSIBLE THROUGH THE SPIRIT. “IT DOESN’T HAPPEN NATURALLY BECAUSE SATAN IS CONSTANTLY TRYING TO DIVIDE US AT HOME AND AT CHURCH.” THEREFORE, WE MUST ENDEAVOR TO KEEP THE UNITY BY HAVING LOWLINESS, MEEKNESS, AND LONGSUFFERING.

“WHEN WE HAVE STRONG, LOVING HOMES, WE WILL ALSO HAVE STRONG, LOVING CHURCHES.”

LIVING A WORTHY LIFE REQUIRES THE RIGHT CHARACTER.

SECOND THING: THE RIGHT THEOLOGY (EPHESIANS 4: 4-6).

THERE SHOULD BE UNITY IN THE CHURCH BECAUSE THERE IS ONE BODY (EPHESIANS 4: 4A). REGARDLESS OF ALL THAT CAN DIVIDE US; RACE, GENDER, POLITICAL VIEWS, SOCIAL STATUS, AND MUSIC PREFERENCES TO NAME A FEW WE BELONG TO ONE BODY, THE BODY OF CHRIST, WHICH IS THE CHURCH. THERE IS ALSO ONE SPIRIT (EPHESIANS 4: 4B).

ROMANS 8: 9B

“THE SAME HOLY SPIRIT INDWELLS EACH OF US AS BELIEVERS.” THEREFORE, THERE SHOULD BE A UNITY OF HOPE AND PURPOSE BECAUSE WE ARE CALLED IN ONE HOPE (EPHESIANS 4: 4C). THE ONE HOPE WE HAVE IN COMMON SHOULD CAUSE US TO WANT TO LIVE LIVES WORTHY OF OUR BLESSINGS IN CHRIST.

1 JOHN 3: 2-3

THIS MEANS OUR ONE HOPE CAUSES US TO WANT TO BE PURE LIKE JESUS. WE WILL STRIVE TO BE HUMBLE, MEEK, AND PATIENT, WHICH IN ONE WORD MEANS LOVING.

  • THERE IS ALSO ONE LORD (EPHESIANS 4: 5A). WHICH REFERS TO CHRIST AS                            HEAD OF THE CHURCH. WE ALL HAVE THE SAME SPIRITUAL BOSS, OR CEO.

  • SINCE THERE IS ONLY ONE LORD AND ONE FAITH, THERE IS ALSO ONLY                                             ONE BAPTISM (EPHESIANS 4: 5C).

1 CORINTHIANS 12: 13A

  • THERE IS ALSO ONE GOD AND FATHER OF ALL, WHO IS ABOVE ALL (EPHESIANS 4: 6A).                  THIS MEANS GOD THE FATHER HAS NEVER HAD, AND WILL NEVER HAVE, AN EQUAL        BECAUSE HE IS SUPREME, OR ABOVE ALL. THEREFORE, HE ALONE DESERVES OUR      DEVOTION. OUR ONE GOD IS ALSO THROUGH ALL, WHICH MEANS HE IS LIVING            THROUGH ALL OF US, BECAUSE IN THE PERSON OF THE HOLY SPIRIT HE IS IN ALL                        OF US (EPHESIANS 4: 6).

LIVING A WORTHY LIFE REQUIRES THE RIGHT CHARACTER, RIGHT THEOLOGY.

THIRD THING: THE RIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARD OUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS (EPHESIANS 4:7-8)

WHILE THERE IS UNITY IN THE BODY OF CHRIST, THERE IS ALSO DIVERSITY BECAUSE UNTO EVERY ONE OF US IS GIVEN GRACE ACCORDING TO THE MEASURE OF THE GIFT OF CHRIST (EPHESIANS 4: 7). THE WORD GRACE HERE DOES NOT REFER TO SAVING GRACE BUT TO EQUIPPING GRACE, OR SPIRITUAL GIFTS. LIKE SAVING GRACE, THIS GRACE IS NOT BASED ON MERIT BUT IS MEASURED OUT BY CHRIST. THE WORD TRANSLATED MEASURE, IS THE GREEK WORD FROM WHICH WE GET OUR WORD METER. IT MEANS A LIMITED PORTION, OR DEGREE. “THEREFORE NO ONE GETS ALL THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS, BUT CHRIST SOVEREIGNLY DECIDES WHICH GIFTS EACH PERSON RECEIVES.

“HE GIVES EVERY BELIEVER AT LEAST ONE SPIRITUAL GIFT, WHICH SHOULD NEVER BE USED SELFISHLY.

1 PETER 4: 10

WHEN CHRIST ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN, HE LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE, AND GAVE GIFTS UNTO MEN (EPHESIANS 4: 8). THEREFORE, WHEN JESUS LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE, HE MADE CAPTIVE ALL THOSE THINGS THAT FORMERLY MADE US CAPTIVE NAMELY SIN AND DEATH.

COLOSSIANS 2: 15

“WHEN JESUS ROSE FROM THE DEAD AND ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN, IN FRONT OF ALL HEAVEN HE PUBLICLY DISGRACED SATAN AND ALL THE POWERS OF EVIL.”

  • BEFORE CHRIST ASCENDED TO HEAVEN, HE ALSO DESCENDED FIRST INTO THE                               LOWER PARTS OF THE EARTH (EPHESIANS 4: 9). THIS PROBABLY REFERS TO                               CHRIST’S DEATH AND BURIAL IN THE GRAVE. IT IS THE SAME JESUS WHO                             DESCENDED AND ASCENDED HIGHER THAN ALL HEAVENS, THAT HE MIGHT FILL                             ALL THINGS (EPHESIANS 4: 10).

JOHN 13: 3

CLOSING

TO LIVE WORTHY LIVES, WHICH REQUIRES THE RIGHT CHARACTER, THE RIGHT THEOLOGY, AND THE RIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARD OUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS.
