                                                                                                 JOURNEY INTO SPIRIT-FILLED LIVING

LESSON 2

ALLOWING GOD TO TRANSFORM YOU

EPHESIANS 1: 7-23

AS BELIEVERS IN CHRIST WE ARE LIKE DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH; SOME OF US MORE SO THAN OTHERS. BEFORE GOD COMPLETES HIS WORK OF CHIPPING OFF THE ROUGH EDGES OF OUR LIVES, WE SOMETIMES WONDER HOW WE COULD EVER BE VALUABLE AND LOVABLE IN GOD’S SIGHT.

PHILIPPIANS 1: 6

THIS MEANS GOD WILL TRANSFORM US INTO THE PERSONS HE WANTS US TO BE. IT’S A PROCESS THAT TAKES A LIFETIME, AND IT’S ALL PART OF THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE.

TO UNDERSTAND HOW GOD CAN TAKE DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH LIKE US AND TRANSFORM US INTO PEOPLE WHO LIVE SPIRIT-FILLED LIVES, WE MUST DO THREE THINGS:

FIRST THING: REFOCUS ON GOD’S PLAN (EPHESIANS 1: 7-10).

GOD SEES US NOT AS WE ARE BUT AS WE CAN BE IN JESUS CHRIST. GOD BEGINS CHIPPING AWAY THE ROUGH EDGES IN OUR LIVES WHERE IN CHRIST WE HAVE REDEMPTION THROUGH HIS BLOOD, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS, ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE (EPHESIANS 1: 7).

“GOD CHIPS AWAY EVERYTHING IN OUR LIVES THAT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE JESUS.”

QUESTION

WHAT DOES GOD USE IN OUR DAILY LIVES, TO HELP CHIP AWAY THINGS IN OUR LIFE, THAT PREVENT US FROM LIVING THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE?

  • THE WORD TRANSLATED REDEMPTION REFERS TO DELIVERANCE FROM SLAVERY. IN THE                                    ROMAN EMPIRE THERE WERE AN ESTIMATED 60 MILLION SLAVES, MANY OF WHOM WERE                                    OFTEN BOUGHT AND SOLD AS PIECES OF PROPERTY. HOWEVER, A PERSON COULD ALSO BUY                                A SLAVE AND SET HIM FREE. THAT IS REDEMPTION, WHICH IS WHAT JESUS DID FOR US WHEN                           HE DIED ON THE CROSS. WHITOUT CHRIST, WE ARE ALL SLAVES TO SIN.

JOHN 8: 34B

“JESUS PAID THE PRICE TO SET US FREE FROM THE SLAVERY OF SIN.”

TITUS 2: 14

NOT ONLY DID GOD SEND JESUS TO PURCHASE US FROM THE SLAVE MARKET OF SIN, BUT ALSO ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE; WHEREIN HE HATH ABOUNDED TOWARD US IN ALL WISDOM AND PRUDENCE (EPHESIANS 1: 7-8).

  • THE WORD TRANSLATED ABOUNDED (PERISSEUO) MEANS SUPER, OR EXTRAVAGANTLY,                       ABUNDANT. THE WORD WISDOM (SOPHIA) MEANS BEING ABLE TO SEE THE WORLD FROM                                     GOD’S PERSPECTIVE. THE WORD PRUDENCE (PHRONESIS) MEANS THE ABILITY TO SEE THE                             RIGHT ACTION IN ANY SITUATION.

PAUL WRITES: HAVING MADE KNOWN UNTO US THE MYSTERY OF HIS WILL, ACCORDING TO HIS GOOD PLEASURE WHICH HE HATH PURPOSED IN HIMSELF (EPHESIANS 1: 9).

  • THE WORD MYSTERY (MUSTERION) DOESN’T REFER TO SOMETHING THAT CAN’T BE                                    UNDERSTOOD BUT TO SOMETHING ONCE CONCEALED BUT NOW REVEALED.

PAUL WRITES: THAT IN THE DISPENSATION OF THE FULNESS OF TIMES HE MIGHT GATHER TOGETHER IN ONE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST, BOTH WHICH ARE IN HEAVEN, AND WHICH ARE ON EARTH; EVEN IN HIM (EPHESIANS 1: 10). THIS MEANS GOD WANTS ALL THINGS IN HEAVEN AND EARTH UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF CHRIST.

AS BELIEVERS, WE ARE ALL PART OF GOD’S ETERNAL PLAN TO GATHER TOGETHER IN ONE ALL THINGS IN CHRIST (EPHESIANS 1: 10).

PHILIPPIANS 2: 10-11

TO LET GOD TRANSFORM YOU, REFOCUS ON GOD’S PLAN

SECOND THING:  RECOGNIZE YOURSELF AS GOD’S PRECIOUS POSSESSION (EPHESIANS 1: 11-18).

PAUL WRITES: IN WHOM ALSO WE HAVE OBTAINED AN INHERITANCE, BEING PREDESTINATED ACCORDING TO THE PURPOSE OF HIM WHO WORKETH ALL THINGS AFTER THE COUNSEL OF HIS OWN WILL: THAT WE SHOULD BE TO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY, WHO FIRST TRUSTED IN CHRIST (EPHESIANS 1: 11-12).

  • THESE VERSES SIMPLY MEAN IN CHRIST WE HAVE BEEN RADICALLY CHANGED FOR THE                                   PRAISE OF HIS GOD’S GLORY. NOTHING CHANGES US LIKE RELATIONSHIPS.

QUESTION

WHY DOES GOD WANT US TO GET TO KNOW JESUS?

1 JOHN 5: 20

PAUL WRITES: THAT WHEN WE HEARD THE WORD OF TRUTH, THE GOSPEL WE BELIEVED IN HIM (EPHESIANS 1: 13). WE BECOME BELIEVERS IN CHRIST WHEN WE HEAR THE WORD OF TRUTH, THE GOSPEL, AND RESPOND IN FAITH.

ROMANS 10: 17

PAUL WRITES: IN WHOM ALSO AFTER THAT YE BELIEVED, YE WERE SEALED WITH THAT HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE (EPHESIANS 1: 13B).

  • THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE SEAL THAT IDENTIFIES US AS GOD’S CHILDREN AND SECURES US UNTIL WE REACH OUR FINAL DESTINATION.

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS THE EARNEST OF OUR INHERITANCE UNTIL THE REDEMPTION OF THE PURCHASED POSSESSION, UNTO THE PRAISE OF HIS GLORY (EPHESIANS 1: 14).

  • THE WORD TRANSLATED EARNEST REFERS TO EARNEST MONEY, OF DEPOSIT, GIVEN BY                                        A PURCHASER.

2 CORINTHIANS 1: 22

“THE HOLY SPIRIT IS A DEPOSIT, GUARANTEEING OUR OWNERSHIP BY GOD AND THAT WE WILL REACH OUR DESTINATION; HEAVEN,

PAUL GIVES THE BELIEVERS AT EPHESUS A WORD OF PRAISE AND ENCOURAGEMENT.

PAUL WRITES: HE CEASES NOT TO GIVE THANKS FOR YOU, MAKING MENTION OF YOU IN MY PRAYERS (EPHESIANS 1: 16).

THAT THE GOD OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, THE FATHER OF GLORY, MAY GIVE UNTO YOU THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND REVELATION IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF HIM (EPHESIANS 1: 17).

  • WHEN YOU PRAY THE WORD OF GOD, YOU ARE ALWAYS PRAYING THE WILL OF GOD BECAUSE                            GOD’S WORD NEVER CONTRADICTS HIS WILL.

“WE SHOULD PRAY FOR OTHER BELIEVERS THAT GOD WOULD GIVE THEM THE SPIRIT OF WISDOM AND REVELATION SO THEY MAY KNOW GOD BETTER.

  • THE WORD TRANSLATED REVELATION MEANS TO UNCOVER OR UNVEIL AND REFERS TO GOD’S               IMPARTING KNOWLEDGE TO US IN TWO WAYS.

FIRST IS REVELATION, WHICH ENABLES US TO UNDERSTAND THE BIBLE.

SECOND IS REVELATION OF THE CHANGES OR APPLICATIONS WE NEED TO MAKE IN OUR LIVES AS WE STUDY THE BIBLE.

PAUL FURTHER PRAYS: THAT THROUGH WISDOM AND REVELATION OUR HEARTS MIGHT BE ENLIGHTENED SO WE MAY KNOW TWO THINGS: THE HOPE OF HIS CALLING AND THE RICHES OF THE GLORY OF HIS INHERITANCE IN THE SAINTS (EPHESIANS 1: 18).

“GOD CONSIDERS US HIS GLORIOUS INHERITANCE.” PAUL IS PRAYING THAT WE WOULD APPRECIATE THE VALUE GOD PLACES ON US.

ALLOWING GOD TO TRANSFORM YOU REQUIRES YOU REFOCUS ON GOD’S PLAN, RECOGNIZE YOURSELF AS GOD’S PRECIOUS POSSESSION.

THIRD THING: RELY ON GOD’S POWER (EPHESIANS 1: 19-23).

“WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE THE AWESOME POWER OF GOD.”

PAUL WRITES: AND WHAT IS THE EXCEEDING GREATNESS OF HIS POWER TO US-WARD WHO BELIEVE, ACCORDING TO THE WORKING OF HIS MIGHTY POWER (EPHESIANS 1: 19).

  • THE FIRST WORD TRANSLATED POWER IS THE WORD FROM WHICH WE GET OUR WORDS                           DYNAMITE AND DYNAMIC. THIS EXCEEDINGLY GREAT POWER IS GIVEN TO US WHO BELIEVE.                              PAUL DESCRIBES THAT POWER AS THE WORKING OF HIS MIGHTY POWER. THE WORD TRANSLATED WORKING (ENERGEIA) IS WHERE WE GET OUR WORD ENERGY.

THIS IS THE SAME POWER THAT HE WROUGHT IN CHRIST, WHEN HE RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD, AND SET HIM AT HIS OWN RIGHT HAND IN THE HEAVENLY PLACES (EPHESIANS 1: 20).

  • LIVING THE SPIRIT-FILLED LIFE BEGINS WITH KNOWING CHRIST AND EXPERIENCING THE                    POWER THAT RAISED HIM FROM THE DEAD.

PHILIPPIANS 3: 10

GOD WANTS TO GIVE US HIS DYNAMIC POWER TO ENERGIZE AND TRANSFORM US. THIS POWER IS FAR ABOVE ALL PRINCIPALITY, AND POWER, AND MIGHT, AND DOMINION, AND EVERY NAME THAT IS NAMED, NOT ONLY IN THIS WORLD, BUT ALSO IN THAT WHICH IS TO COME (EPHESIANS 1: 21). “THIS MEANS GOD’S POWER IS FAR ABOVE ANY POSITION OR POWER IN CREATION.”

OFTEN, WHEN WE TRY CHANGE FOR THE BETTER, WE FEEL OVERWHELMED AND DISCOURAGED BECAUSE CHANGING IS NOT EASY. WE WONDER, CAN I EVER BREAK THAT BAD HABIT? WILL I EVER BE MORE LOVING?

WHEN THAT HAPPENS, WE NEED TO REMEMBER GOD HAS PUT ALL THINGS UNDER HIS FEET (EPHESIANS 1: 22A). IF THEY ARE UNDER HIS FEET, THEY ARE UNDER OURS, TOO.

1 JOHN 4: 4B

PAUL WRITES: THAT GOD GAVE HIM TO BE THE HEAD OVER ALL THINGS TO THE CHURCH, WHICH IS HIS BODY (EPHESIANS 1: 22B-23A). THIS MEANS CHRIST IS THE HEAD OF THE BODY OF BELIEVERS, THE CHURCH.

  • WHAT DOES YOUR PHYSICAL HEAD DO? IT DIRECTS THE ACTIONS OF YOUR BODY. OUR                                SPIRITUAL HEAD, JESUS DIRECTS WITH HIS WORD, THE BIBLE, AND EMPOWERS WITH HIS SPIRIT.

THEREFORE, WE ARE THE FULLNESS OF HIM THAT FILLETH ALL IN ALL (EPHESIANS 1: 23B). THIS MEANS CHRIST FILLS AND EMPOWERS BELIEVERS, THE CHURCH HIS BODY, BECAUSE EVERYTHING HE WANTS TO DO ON EARTH, HE WANTS TO DO THROUGH US.

CLOSING

ALLOWING GOD TO TRANSFORM YOU REQUIRES YOU REFOCUS ON GOD’S PLAN, RECOGNIZE YOURSELF AS GOD’S PRECIOUS POSSESSION, AND RELY ON GOD’S POWER.
